Vol. 9, Issue 2, December 2008
Kind of activity: Information Gap Picture Dictation Preparation time: 2 minutes Intended student population: beginners, any age, teams of 8 or fewer Lesson goals and objectives: describing, listening comprehension, and speaking Time limit: 15 minutes Materials: paper, pencils, rulers (optional) Activity instructions: Give each student a piece of paper. Instruct or demonstrate folding the paper three times to make 8 sections. Unfold Optional: To expand the activity, give out rulers and ask them to draw three straight lines on fold lines, from edge to edge. Demonstrate with gestures if no one can figure out what that means. Each student numbers the rectangles from 1 to 8, in any order. Assign each student a number (or count off). Each student refolds the paper so that his/her number is on top, with other rectangles inside or underneath. Each student has 2 minutes to draw a picture in his/her rectangle of something he/she can name or describe in English. Student #1 describes picture #1 and everyone has 2 minutes to draw it in rectangle #1. Student #1 shows his/her picture, all others show their #1 pictures. Continue with Student #2. Annette Burton first taught ESL in the Atlanta area before moving to New York City, where she has taught at P.S.183 for the last 15 years. She enjoys materials development and has done numerous workshops on games in the ESL classroom.
